For the third year in a row, organizations report time and money as obstacles that delay investing in tools to automate manual processes
OAKLAND, CA – January 19, 2022 – Atrius, part of Acuity Brands, Inc. (NYSE: AYI), today released its third annual State of Energy Management Report. Based on a survey of more than 600 energy management professionals across six industries, the report reflects the continued transformation in how leaders develop, achieve, and communicate sustainability goals.
This year’s research, conducted in partnership with Smart Energy Decisions, showed how organizations manage, measure, and interact with indoor spaces. While nearly 80 percent of respondents reported a commitment to creating greener spaces, they also noted that to accomplish this goal they need better control of buildings at scale, deeper visibility into corporate goals, and more precise data.
For the third year in a row, the research indicates that time and money are obstacles that delay implementing an Energy Management Information System (EMIS), a tool central to automating manual processes and helping teams develop and lead reduction strategies leveraging data-driven insights. This trend is striking, as nearly 40 percent of respondents reported their company’s ESG goals are aligned to financial reporting. As organizations around the world adopt initiatives to combat the effects of climate change, they should consider how to support resources such as an EMIS to achieve meaningful climate crisis mitigation and meet corporate financial goals in the future.
Atrius will host a webinar Wednesday, January 19 to review this year’s State of Energy Management survey with an expert panel discussing the findings. Debra Chanil, Research & Content Director for Smart Energy Decisions, will moderate a conversation with:
- Kelly Christensen, Manager of Strategy & Pursuits, Energy & Sustainability, Black & McDonald
- Dennis Carlberg, Associate Vice President, Sustainability, Boston University
- Ian LaHiff, P.E., LEED-AP, Energy Performance Manager, City of Orlando
- Adam Handler, Director, Corporate Sustainability & Communications, Acuity Brands
The report shows that visibility, transparency, and awareness into sustainability and energy reduction efforts have the potential to elicit broader stakeholder commitment. More than half the survey respondents from Government, Higher Education/K-12, Industrial/Manufacturing, Healthcare and Software/Technology cited a need for deeper employee engagement and executive support.
“As someone who is responsible for reducing the carbon footprint for Acuity Brands, I understand the importance of having visibility into real-time energy data,” said Adam Handler, Director, Corporate Sustainability & Communications, Acuity Brands. “Our multi-year ESG journey reflected in our EarthLIGHT program is directly integrated in our company strategy, and to accomplish our goals, we need the help of every associate. If energy use data is too vague for our associates to connect with, they won’t see the value of sustainability efforts. The findings from this year’s survey validate what we are attempting within Acuity Brands – communicating and connecting our initiatives across every level of the organization.”
Energy, facility, and sustainability leaders are invited to join fellow industry luminaries at the January 19 webinar to hear how to define priorities for energy programs, describe the need for corporate-driven awareness of sustainability programs and how to overcome the barriers of time and money that prevent many from implementing an EMIS.
